Last year, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare opened the doors to one of its newest expansions – Shorb Tower – on the campus of Methodist University Hospital. This $275 million dollar investment is home to a variety of healthcare specialties including transplant, cardiology, blood and marrow transplant and oncology.

Throughout its first year, Shorb Tower has had many accomplishments and has allowed Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare to continue providing high-quality patient-and-family centered care to the community.

With the addition of Shorb Tower, Methodist University Hospital received an “A” letter grade designation from Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. Twice annually, Leapfrog assigns grade letter designations to over 2,000 adult general acute-care hospitals in the nation. Through the use of numerous performance measures, Leapfrog is able to produce a single letter grade to represent a hospitals performance in patient safety.  

Another major accomplishment was the launch of the Blood and Marrow Transplant and Infusion Clinic. Throughout its first year, the BMT and Infusion Clinic performed a record 105 Bone Marrow Transplants. The BMT program also became a Center of Excellence with four major insurance companies, a designation for exceptionally high concentrations of expertise.

Shorb Tower also became the new home for the Methodist Transplant Institute at Methodist University Hospital. The Methodist Transplant Institute specializes in liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation and performed 237 solid transplants in 2019. The Transplant Institute performed six live donor liver transplants and 24 live donor kidney transplants during its first year in the Shorb Tower.

This beautiful new facility is equipped with infusion and phlebotomy services, Apple technology, larger patient rooms and dedicated transplant operating space.

The additional 450,000 square foot tower at Methodist University Hospital allows us to continue providing comprehensive care to our patients and families. This new expansion provides 18 state of the art operating rooms for highly specialized surgical procedures including neurosurgery, transplant, cardiovascular, orthopedic, ENT, oncology and general surgery cases. Through its inception, Shorb Tower has provided tremendous innovative opportunities to increase the healthcare landscape in Memphis. After having already accomplished so much in the first year, we look forward to the future of Shorb Tower and the many developments to come.
