Embracing Faith-Based Healthcare: Our Holistic Approach

By Rhonda Gilligan-Gillespie, Director of Adult Spiritual Care

In the realm of healthcare, where science and compassion intersect, the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (MLH) system stands out as a beacon of faith-based healthcare. As Spiritual Care Week 2023 approaches, we invite you to explore how faith, compassion, and a commitment to community well-being come together to shape our approach to healthcare.

Holistic Healing - Mind, Body, and Spirit

Our journey in faith-based healthcare has spanned over a century, rooted in the belief that holistic healing encompasses the mind, body, and spirit. This holistic approach to healthcare has shaped the very foundation of MLH's services, making us unique in our commitment to addressing the spiritual dimension of well-being.

Faith-Based Healthcare and the Community

In the words of Mr. Cato Johnson, Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs and Chief of Staff at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, "We serve our entire city. We don’t just talk the mission; we live the mission." This commitment to the mission includes a strong emphasis on addressing the social determinants of health, serving the underserved, and advocating for health equity. MLH's partnerships with local faith communities are a testament to our dedication to the community's well-being. We believe that our mission extends beyond the walls of our healthcare system, reflecting our firm belief that the care of our community is a shared responsibility.

Faith-Based Healthcare and Associates

Chaplains and the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) are integral components of our Mission Integration Division, overseen by Mr. Cato Johnson. Chaplains are not limited to hospital settings; they are assigned to each clinical unit within our facilities, including some outpatient locations. All MLH associates and departments can access chaplain services for ongoing and urgent needs, demonstrating that faith-based care is not confined to specific roles within our organization. Our associates embody the meaningfulness of faith-based care as they find purpose in their work and consider it a calling.

Faith-Based Healthcare Beyond Four Walls

So, what makes our healthcare system different from faith-based healthcare? The answer is simple – take a look. It’s all around you. Faith-based healthcare, or perhaps more aptly named "faithful healthcare," is not limited to the confines of our healthcare facilities. It is deeply ingrained in the hearts of our associates and evident in the care provided to our patients, their families, our associates, and our providers. The impact extends to our broader community. Faith-based healthcare is not just a concept; it's a way of life. We invite you to make it your own, as it truly makes a difference.
