Exercise and Mental Health: The Power of Movement
How can we use the power of movement to support our mental health?
When we think about exercise, we often think about the benefits to our physical health. However, staying active can be just as important for our mental well-being. Movement can help manage stress, improve our mood and give us a chance to step away from the demands of everyday life. With busy schedules and family commitments, finding time to exercise can sometimes feel difficult. The good news is that taking care of our mental health through movement doesn’t have to mean spending hours at the gym. Small amounts of activity throughout the day can make a significant difference.
How Exercise Supports Our Mental Health
Exercise can give us an opportunity to focus on something other than our daily stressors. Taking a walk, stretching or completing a workout can provide a much-needed mental break and help us feel refreshed. Staying active can also give us a sense of accomplishment. Whether we walk for 20 minutes, try a new fitness class or simply choose to move more during the day, reaching small goals can help build our confidence and motivate us to continue. Movement can also be a way to connect with others. Walking with a coworker, exercising with a friend or participating in a group activity allows us to support our physical and mental health while enjoying time with others.
Finding Ways to Move
Exercise does not have to look the same for all of us. We may enjoy walking, dancing, running, gardening, cycling, yoga, strength training or simply spending time outdoors. What matters is finding something we enjoy and can realistically incorporate as part of our daily routine. We can start small – taking a short walk during lunch, stretching after a long day or inviting a friend to join us for an activity, can help us create healthier habits over time. Exercise is not a replacement for professional mental health care when we need it, but it can be one valuable part of caring for our overall well-being. When we make time to move, we are doing something positive for our bodies and our minds.
