Your First Mammogram: What to Expect and Why It Matters

For many women, a first mammogram can bring a mix of emotions, from confidence and empowerment to uncertainty about what to expect. The good news is that a mammogram is a quick, routine screening that can play a critical role in protecting your health.

Annual screening mammograms can detect abnormalities and tumors before they can be felt and before symptoms develop. Early detection saves lives.

Why Your First Mammogram Matters

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breast that helps identify changes that may indicate breast cancer or other breast conditions. Because mammograms can detect abnormalities early, they are one of the most effective tools in breast cancer screening.

"One of the most important things women can do for their breast health is stay current with annual mammograms. These screenings allow us to find potential concerns at their earliest and most treatable stages." — Cherie Heard, Sr. Director of Procedural & Support Services, Methodist South Hospital

What to Expect During Your Appointment

If you've never had a mammogram before, understanding the process can help you feel more comfortable.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a specialized, low-dose X-ray that captures images of breast tissue. These images are reviewed by radiologists trained to identify even subtle changes that may require further evaluation.

How long will it take?

The entire visit typically takes about 15 minutes. During the screening, each breast is compressed for approximately 10 to 15 seconds per image, and most women need two images of each breast.

Will it hurt?

Some women experience temporary discomfort during breast compression, but the sensation lasts only a few seconds. Compression is necessary to obtain the clearest images while using the lowest radiation dose possible. Technologists work with patients to maximize comfort throughout the exam.

"Many women are relieved to discover their first mammogram is much quicker and easier than they expected. Our technologists are focused on creating a comfortable, supportive experience from start to finish." — Audrey Jolliff, Radiology Manager, Methodist South Hospital

When Should You Start Getting Mammograms?

Annual screening mammograms are recommended beginning at age 40. Depending on personal and family history, some women may qualify for a baseline mammogram as early as age 35. Talk with your healthcare provider about the screening plan that's right for you.

Tips for a Positive First Mammogram Experience
